<image:title>About - About Epiphania</image:title>
<image:caption>“Our altar, the world. Our canvas, the universe.” ~ Carrie Rehak In 1990, Carrie wrote a pithy artist statement that still holds true today: “My paintings are my prayers.” Even works that depict seemingly “secular” subjects — seas, skies, light, shadow — are, to her, sacred. In 2000, she opened Epiphania—a sacred arts studio and gathering space for making, teaching, and spiritual exploration. In 2010, she relocated her studio to Crockett, an unincorporated town, where the Carquinez Strait meets the San Pablo Bay. The transformation of the space, from storage room to sanctuary, was both literal and metaphorical. Inspired by wayside shrines and santuarios, the studio, was designed to be ever-evolving. However, in 2020, Carrie made the painful yet clear decision to close the brick-and-mortar studio. Where is Epiphania now? To quote Kit White in 101 Things to Learn in Art School: “The studio is more than a place to work: it is a state of mind.” Soul Grove Sanctuary and &&& are outgrowths of Epiphania, and byproducts of day-to-day personal and communal experience and practice as well as proximate and remote, sacred and secular, ancient and future-oriented inspirations and influences, from restorative practices and performance art to permaculture and new cosmology. Although reflective of Carrie’s rootedness in the Catholic tradition - or, more accurately, in Catholicity (a la Ilia Delio) - they are primarily fruits of friendships, with pilgrims, seekers, imagineers, innovators, change-makers, and communion with the living world. It is in hope - what French philosopher Gabriel Marcel describes as the "memory of the future"—that we offer these digital and in-person sacred offerings—reflections and practices—that we may be more just, more merciful, more inclusive, more connected, more vibrant, more engaged, more loving, more whole — that is, more fully alive.</image:caption>

<image:title>About - About Carrie Rehak</image:title>
<image:caption>Carrie realizes her creative, intellectual, and spiritual aspirations through an array of practices and media—including ecospirituality, permaculture, cosmology, restorative justice, nonviolence, theopoetics, and the arts. In 2013, Carrie attended a formative training with Joanna Macy, Anne Symens-Bucher, and other community members at Canticle Farm, in Oakland, California, and has since become a certified Work that Reconnects practitioner and facilitator. Carrie also finds life giving Nonviolent Communication (NVC), which she also began training in and practicing in 2013. Her approach – what Carrie finds most enlivening, transformative, fruitful, and authentic to who she is – is "art for life's sake": ethical aesthetics, theopoetics, and art/life, thanks in large part to the influence of such luminaries as Deborah J. Haynes, Linda Mary Montano, Maren Hassinger, and other contemporary visionaries who attempt “to dissolve the boundaries between art and life" (Montano), sacred and secular, personal and political, process and product, and ritual and performance. Carrie holds both an M.A. and Ph.D. in Theology, with a concentration in the arts, from the Graduate Theological Union, in Berkeley. She has held positions in nonprofit leadership and as an instructor and director of programs in educational settings—forums that continually ground her ideas in real-world engagement. Her quest is one of meaning: what is the relationship between our experience and our reflections on, and expressions of, that experience? And how does this relationship bear on personal, social, and ecological responsibility? Above all, Carrie is committed to formal and informal communities of makers, seekers, and learners—as creative agents of transformation, liberation, and flourishing.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Love recognizes no barriers. It jumps hurdles, leaps fences, penetrates walls to arrive at its destination full of hope.” ~Maya Angelou The most recent string of nine days of our “Beaded Street Novena for Racial Justice” concluded yesterday, December 20th, the day before the winter solstice. For the next seven days, we will reflect on what happened, before beginning our next nine days of prayer, from December 28th through January 5th (the day Georgia will be holding two runoff elections for U.S. Senate, and one day before the Feast of Epiphany and when Congress will formalize the Presidential nomination), and so on, through March (and beyond). Our suggested intentions for the “Winter Novena” are: & Equity in Education (January) & Safe Working Conditions and Equal Employment Opportunities (February)</image:caption>

As we gaze upon the empty chair before us, we bring to mind and heart those who have died - family, friends, and other loved ones missing at the table - and we give thanks for having had them in our lives. <image:title>Newsletter - Introduction to Slow Time - An Invitation to Slow Time from a Lifelong Learner of Rest</image:title>
<image:caption>by Carrie Rehak The late Irish poet and theologian John O’Donohue begins his blessing “For One Who Is Exhausted”: When the rhythm of the heart becomes hectic, Time takes on the strain until it breaks; Then all the unattended stress falls in On the mind like an endless, increasing weight. I imagine that most of us have experienced, or will likely experience, such exhaustion, which is why I am coming to experience Sabbath not only as a commandment but as a gift. The Divine, scripture assures us, desires to give us respite: ‘Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.’ (Matt. 11-28). You may consider me a slow learner of slow time: I have a tendency to occupy each moment of every day with projects, about which I nearly always feel impassioned and wholeheartedly committed. Even my hours set aside for sleep tend to be crammed with impactful dreams, punctuated by involuntarily wakeful vigil. Regardless of my many wise and patient mentors, I remain a beginner when it comes to contemplative rest. A student of scripture. Of the natural world. Of trusted teachers, family, and friends. Of beauty and loss. Of poetry and my own practice in art. And, of spiritual and religious traditions, my own as well as others, that practice some form of holy leisure. Since June 2015, I have worked in a field that honors the Hebrew understanding of Sabbath and sabbatical by providing a leisurely learning environment for renewal in body, mind, and spirit for faith-based leaders, change-makers, teachers, and seekers, who are depleted, in transition, or simply in need of a break. Through my work I have become increasingly convinced that all of us, from diverse walks of life—whether working in the home, in a university, in the church, or in any other field—need to pause. One former participant, who was pastor of two parishes, told me that his sabbatical not only saved his vocation but his life. Quoting Wendell Berry: “Sabbath observance invites us to stop. It invites us to rest. It asks us to notice that while we rest, the world continues without our help. It invites us to delight in the world’s beauty and abundance.” In many ways, those who know me find it ironic at best that I am working in a field that is in the service of rest. My work, however, has been a supreme teacher: over the years I have witnessed, time and again, the transformation that takes place in the lives of those who come exhausted and depart radiant. One participant described her sabbatical experience as a path to discovering more of her “True Self.” Finding a spiritual home at Incarnation Monastery, in Berkeley, has also instructed me in rest, in contemplative rest. My relationship with this praying community continues to open in me a more spacious spirituality that, to quote Josef Pieper on leisure, “… is rather like the stillness in the conversation of lovers, which is fed by their oneness.” I have also learned from a little book by Buddhist monk and peace activist Thich Nhat Hanh, entitled How to Relax, in which he offers simple techniques for experiencing rest, such as returning throughout the day to the “refuge of your breath.” He writes: “Whenever you’re carried away by thinking, overwhelmed by strong emotions, or feeling restless and dispersed, return to your breathing…. With awareness of the breath, our breathing naturally becomes light, calm, and peaceful.” He also suggests calendaring for ourselves “lazy days,” with unscheduled time. He says, “A lazy day is a chance to train ourselves not to be afraid of doing nothing…. Your time is first of all for you to be—to be alive, to be peace.” One of my favorite suggestions — one that I have yet to put into practice — is the “breathing room,” which consists of a dedicated space, no matter how simple or small, in your home, for the sole purpose of relaxing. He says, “This is not a space for eating or doing homework, or folding laundry or building anything. This is as essential as a place to eat, sleep, and go to the bathroom. We need a small space where we can take care of our nervous system and restore our tranquility and peace.” “Slow time” is not another occasion for effort. It is not about adding but subtracting. Do less. Be more. It can be as simple as choosing one day a week to buy nothing, online or in brick-and-mortars, giving not only yourself but others a rest. For me, “slow time” is a camino. A journey with hills and slopes, twists and turns, and the occasional bench that overlooks seemingly endless vistas. Will you sit with me? In closing his blessing “For One Who is Exhausted,” John O’Donohue writes: Gradually, you will return to yourself, Having learned a new respect for your heart And the joy that dwells far within slow time.</image:caption>

<image:title>Newsletter - &&& Fall 2019 Seed-Bombing Novena - &&&’s Fall 2019 DIY Devotion</image:title>
<image:caption>"A Seed-Bombing Novena with St. Francis & Friends of Our Common Home" “I have done what was mine to do, now may you do what is yours.” -St. Francis of Assisi If you are not already familiar with &&&’s “Street Novena” practices or with seed bombing, we invite you to you to visit the following introductions before beginning the following nine-day “seed-bombing novena.” Introduction to Street Novenas Introduction to Seed Bombing How to Make a Seed Bomb: Many recipes exist and fluctuate according to the size and type of seed. Here is mine (please share yours): 5 parts dry potter’s clay or soil clay with 3 parts peat-free, organic compost, and 1 part or less of native, non-invasive, pollinating seeds (for my region, California Poppies and Gilia will be my seeds-of-choice for fall, with the addition of Cosmos and Marigolds for spring), 1-2 part water (adding more, as needed), a dash of chili powder (to protect the seeds from insect invasion), intuition and further research. Mix dry ingredients together and add water until you form a paste-like mixture. Roll into two-inch balls. You may want to place the balls on a tray near a window to expedite drying (a day or two). Putting It Together: What I will be doing this fall (and you…?): An intention or intentions: that the Global Climate Strike and upcoming Amazon synod will continue to build momentum. That all of us will be moved to protect the exploited, contemplate the creative, nourish the generative: to do what is ours to do. To do what is mine to do. A saint, canonized or not, to entrust the intention: Saint Francis Nine days, with start and end dates: Th., September 26, through Fri., October 4 (Feast of Saint Francis) The practice: a walking novena, with nine days of seed-bombing, following these daily meditations: Day One: Silence Day Two: The Green New Deal, the Sunrise Movement, and the Future Day Three: Canticle Farm Day Four: Mary “Leo” Leolin Bowerman Day Five: Winona LaDuke Day Six: Joanna Macy Day Seven: Sylvia Earl Day Eight: Wangari Maathai Day Nine: Greta Thunberg I will be offering 10% of my income from these nine days to Canticle Farm, for the renovation of part of their property to sponsor families engaged in the asylum process. I invite you to do the same, or whatever you can offer, either to help support Canticle Farm or some other friend of our common home: https://canticlefarmoakland.org/renovation/ May this novena be one way to creatively respond to our need for an "integral ecology," that is both environmental and social, transforming all modes of violence into manifestations of life and love. As we are a community of learners, I invite you to please share your seed-bombing wisdom, narratives, suggestions, and resources here. Please email me if you would like to attend or possibly host an in-person seed-bomb making workshop in advance of a pop-up pilgrimage in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Earth Day this spring 2020. *If you have legal and ethical concerns regarding seed bombing, please check with officials and experts local to your area.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Even before the recent negative connotations and associations, orange has been an unusually controversial and emotionally-charged color. Yet, many people consider orange a hue of healing, creativity, sexuality, vitality, and wellness – for example, as it is associated with the sacral chakra. While in future issues we can go into further explanation around the psychology and spirituality of the color orange, this month we aim to reclaim it, while tending to our holistic health, personal and planetary, with a DIY, one-ingredient (pumpkin purée), detoxifying and nourishing facial mask – perhaps something to don while phone banking. Just wipe the remaining puree from the inside of your measuring cup as you whip up this nutritional, autumnal, vegan smoothie: 1 cup almond or oat milk 1/2 cup pumpkin purée 1 banana 1 tablespoon of date or maple syrup or three or more Medjool dates (more if you prefer sweeter) A handful of walnuts 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (DIY: 6 vanilla beans, slit or chopped, submerged in one cup of 80 proof bourbon, brandy, or vodka, in tightly sealed bottle. Shake and store at room temperature for two to twelve months. Refill with more alcohol as you use it. Keep beans submerged. Replace or remove beans as needed. <image:caption>&&&’s Summer Issue comes on the heels of our eleventh-hour Spring Issue, that introduced the Yearlong (and Beyond) Beaded Novena for Racial Justice: a series of prayers, encircling the year, from mid-April 2020 through mid-March 2021, with an ongoing pattern of nine days on and seven days off. This novena follows the general guidelines described in our “Introduction to ‘Street Novenas’,” and includes: & An intention or intentions. & A saint, canonized or not, to entrust the need. & Nine days, with start and end dates. & A practice. Specific to this novena (yet open for adaptation): & THE INTENTION: our common and ongoing intention is for RACIAL JUSTICE, and will amplify, envision, and work toward the following: Summer 2020 Issue: July: Acknowledgement of Systemic and Entrenched Racialized Injustice August: For Equality in Access to Healthy Foods, Healthy Living Conditions, and Medical Care September: For Economic Parity Fall 2020 Issue: October: For Protection of Voting Rights November: For Police Reform December: For Reform to the Criminal Justice System Winter 2020/2021 Issue: January: For Equity in Education February: For Safe Working Conditions and for Equal Employment Opportunities Spring 2021 Issue: March and Beyond: For Integral Ecology / Environmental Justice (which is inseparable from Racial Justice)</image:caption>

<image:title>Newsletter - &&&'s Summer 2020 "Let It Shine!" Yearlong (and Beyond) Beaded Novena for Racial Justice</image:title>
<image:caption>& A saint, someone, canonized or not, to entrust the need: we have invited “the Woman Clothed with the Sun” to accompany us on this journey. & Nine days, with start and end dates: we started on 4/14, with an initial end-date on Earth Day, 4/22, then decided to continue with the beaded pattern of nine days on, seven days off, nine days on, seven days off, which will continue through March 2021. July 3-11 will be the next string of prayers, followed by seven spacer days, then picking back up July 19-27, etc. & A practice: you may design your own; we are mainly walking, with additional practices, some of which we will share in these issues. For example, during the spring novena, I “planted” native pollinators, California Poppies and Gilia, on neglected and desecrated patches of earth. I also wrote letters to my county and city officials, urging that we have a mask requirement where I live (which was not the case at the time). In my letters, I argued that their vote (mostly white) would either perpetuate the white supremacy that has dominated our city, county, and country, or it would be a vote that values the lives of brown and black people, who are dying disproportionately from Covid-19 – not due to genetics but from entrenched, racialized injustice. A mask requirement, which would help reduce the spread of Covid-19, I urged, is just one small but concrete way for our city and county to help to protect Black Lives. (The Solano County Supervisors voted down a mandate for the county, 3-2, with Supervisors Monica Brown and Skip Thomson voting in favor of it. And, on May 26, the City of Benicia rejected a mask mandate 3-2, with Mayor Elizabeth Patterson and Councilman Steve Young voting in favor of it. Benicia’s City Council did end up voting unanimously on face-covering requirements, two days before the State mandated them.) I also donated to the Benicia Mask Makers, who at the time had made over 7,600 masks for public health workers and for our community. But, here is the tragic and eye-opening (at least for me) irony: although, according to the Washington Post: the people most likely to wear masks are comprised mainly of people of color and college-educated Americans, wearing a mask to protect myself and others, without fear of profiling, is another example of white privilege, as elucidated in this opinion piece on “why some black men fear wearing face masks during a pandemic." In fact, people of color are exempt from an Oregon county's mask mandate over concerns about racial profiling. I realize my carefree attitude toward seed-bombing, and what “trouble” that may get me in (likely a hand-slap, if anything), also comes from my place of privilege, as a white person. While I will continue to support the making and wearing of masks as well as guerilla gardening, I will do so with far more awareness and humility. And, I commit to doing my part to make things as right and just as possible for those who would be unduly at-risk for engaging such life-giving activities.</image:caption>

<image:title>Newsletter - &&&'s Summer 2020 "Let It Shine!" Yearlong (and Beyond) Beaded Novena for Racial Justice</image:title>
<image:caption>Again, for these street novenas, materials, such as candles, photos, and other creative expressions and ex votos are, like everything else, optional and adaptable. We encourage you to share your practices, suggestions, as well as any other feedback here. As stated in our newsletter introducing Street Novenas: “What is most important is that we find ourselves belonging to something larger than ourselves, an ever-evolving and adaptable tradition, a spacious community. Mystery. Love. The Really Real.” What we are suggesting is something transformational. As we know all too well, a changed statue or statute can only go so far if we don’t change hearts, minds, systems, behaviors, and relationships. Is prayer enough? Certainly not. However, a collective intention not only has the possibility of changing our own hearts and habits but the hearts and habits of others, in this case I am thinking specifically of myself as a privileged white person. May my heart and habits be changed. And, like a Morphogenic Field, may the unseen forces that carry information across time and space link with and influence others of this same self-organizing system, through a collective and cumulative memory. The more repetitive an act, such as a novena for racial justice, according to this hypothesis, the greater the power for it to resonate and replicate – with potentiality for further innovation and evolution. May we be like candles. May we be clothed with sun. May we let our light shine, as Sister Rosetta Tharpe proclaims here, from 1960. More importantly, especially if we are “opportunity hoarding” white people, may we ensure that all lights may shine, here and around the globe, now and into the future, igniting and illumining racial justice and celebrating, by putting at the center and decentralizing ourselves, the countless contributions of black Americans. This summer I will be reading Rev. Dr. Valerie A. Miles-Tribble’s recently published book Change Agent Church in Black Lives Matter Times: Urgency for Action. Rev. Dr. Miles-Tribble is Associate Professor of Ministerial Leadership and Practical Theology at the Berkeley School of Theology (formerly American Baptist Seminary of the West) and Chair of Women's Studies in Religion (WSR), at the Graduate Theological Union (GTU), in Berkeley. Please email if you would like to join me in an online reading circle of this impactful book: “Volatile social dissonance in America’s urban landscape is the backdrop as Valerie A. Miles-Tribble examines tensions in ecclesiology and public theology, focusing on theoethical dilemmas that complicate churches’ public justice witness as prophetic change agents. She attributes churches’ reticence to confront unjust disparities to conflicting views, for example, of Black Lives Matter protests as ‘mere politics,’ and disparities in leader and congregant preparation for public justice roles. As a practical theologian with experience in organizational leadership, Miles-Tribble applies adaptive change theory, public justice theory, and a womanist communitarian perspective, engaging Emilie Townes’s construct of cultural evil as she presents a model of social reform activism re-envisioned as public discipleship. She contends that urban churches are urgently needed to embrace active prophetic roles and thus increase public justice witness. ‘Black Lives Matter times’ compel churches to connect faith with public roles as spiritual catalysts of change.” This summer, I donated to the Greatest Needs Fund at the Jesuit School of Theology (JST-SCU), an international theologate, at the GTU, to help support our dedicated, prophetic, and visionary students, whom I serve, with their unexpected costs that resulted from the pandemic.</image:caption>

<image:title>Newsletter - Introduction to &&& - Epiphania Sacred Arts introduces &&& …</image:title>
<image:caption>A seasonal newsletter & practices for cultivating contemplative creativity, spiritual activism, & compassionate community. &&&, an outgrowth of Epiphania, has been germinating for decades: a product of day-to-day personal and communal, proximate and remote, sacred and secular, and ancient and contemporary inspirations, from restorative practices and performance art to creative protest and new cosmology. Although reflective of Carrie’s grounding in the Catholic tradition, &&& is primarily a fruit of friendships, with pilgrims, seekers, imagineers, innovators, and change-makers. It also reflects moments, however fleeting, of communion with the other-than-human. It is in hope - what French philosopher Gabriel Marcel describes as the "memory of the future" - that this venue is offered: that we may be more just, more merciful, more inclusive, more connected, more vibrant, more engaged, more loving - that is, more fully alive.</image:caption>

<image:title>Newsletter - &&& Spring 2020 Issue - &&&’s Spring Issue Introduces… A Yearlong Street Novena for Racial Justice</image:title>
<image:caption>Since mid-April, I have been practicing a series of street novenas with a few friends, who have done it remotely, from their respective locations. When the initial nine days were completed, I felt a need to continue. Mary Fran suggested we wait seven days, with time to reflect on what had happened, before beginning again. We decided we would continue that way, nine days on, seven days off, nine days on, seven days off, “like beads.” This rhythm, of beads and spacers, is what we have been following, and which we invite you to join, until we make a full string of prayers around the year to the end of next spring: for racial justice. Brown and black communities are dying disproportionately from the coronavirus. They are also being killed. Recent killings, by law enforcement and civilians, in the U.S. alone, include: Ahmaud Arbery (age 25, May 8, 1994 – February 23, 2020) Breonna Taylor (age 26, June 5, 1993 – March 13) Nina Pop (age 28, b.? – May 3, 2020) Dreasjon “Sean” Reed (age 21, June 16 – May 6, 2020) Dion Johnson (age 28, b.? – May 25, 2020) George Floyd (age 46, October 14, 1973 – May 25, 2020) Tony McDade (age 38, b.? – May 27, 2020) David McAtee (age 53, b.? – June 1, 2020) Rayshard Brooks (age 27, b.? – June 12, 2020) (If you know any of the missing birthdates, please share them with me so that I can add them.) With over 400 years of systemic racism on this nation’s soil, &&& will be entirely dedicated, from now until next spring, and beyond, to racial justice and to celebrating a few of the countless, major contributions of African Americans. In action and prayer, the next issues of &&& will focus on, and will continue to stay committed to, the following: Summer 2020 Issue: July: Acknowledgement of Systemic and Entrenched Racialized Injustice August: For Equality in Access to Healthy Foods, Healthy Living Conditions, and Medical Care September: For Economic Parity Fall 2020 Issue: October: For Protection of Voting Rights November: For Police Reform December: For Reform to the Criminal Justice System Winter 2020/2021 Issue: January: For Equity in Education February: For Safe Working Conditions and for Equal Employment Opportunities Spring 2021 Issue: March and Beyond: For Integral Ecology / Environmental Justice (which is inseparable from Racial Justice) I am grateful to the student who, in a course I was teaching this June, brought to my to attention the prophetic work of John Wilson (1922-2015). Particularly poignant are his studies for the mural he painted in 1952, of an African American family witnessing a horrific lynching by the Ku Klux Klan. While the mural itself, entitled The Incident, is no longer extant, the studies, sketches and paintings, based on images Wilson saw in the paper as a child, were preserved. Last year, they traveled from the Faulconer Gallery, at Grinnell College, to the David C. Driskell Center, at the University of Maryland, College Park, Clark Atlanta University Art Museum, and then to the Yale University Art Gallery. Quoting the description on the Driskell Center website: “The exhibition examines this critical body of Wilson’s work and provides a context for his practice as a whole, which was devoted to art and social justice. It also serves as a prompt for larger, more in-depth discussions about the history of racial-terror lynching in America and the profound physical and emotional scars it has left on the country’s collective consciousness.” May we not turn away from these devastating images. Rather, may we study them and amplify (or magnify) them, as John Wilson did through his artwork, and, as a result, repair, as much as possible, the traumas, wounds, and scars of centuries of white supremacy and racialized injustice until, as individuals, a nation, a world, and, most of all, one family, we can together sing with conviction: “We have overcome.” Although Epiphania needed to cancel our original plans for the seed-bomb-making workshops and Earth Day pilgrimage, it was with far greater awareness and intentionality that dozens of seed-bombs, made last fall, of native, non-invasive, pollinating seeds (for my region, California Poppies and Gilia), were strewn onto neglected or desecrated land, during this spring's novena. I can already see, in some places, new life rising. This spring, I have donated to several places requesting support, including the Benicia Mask Makers, founded by Bodil Fox, who have made over 7,600 masks for public health workers and for the community. To help offset their costs, consider donating through Paypal to Ruby Wallis @ beniciaruby@yahoo.com. In the next issues of &&&, we will send more specifics for the novena, which follow the general guidelines described in our introductory newsletter, always open for adaption: & An intention or intentions (stated above). & A saint, canonized or not, to entrust the need. & Nine days, with start and end dates (we started on 4/14, with an initial end-date on Earth Day, 4/22. With the beaded pattern of seven days off, followed by nine days on, we will continue through March 2021). & A practice (we are walking, with additional practices, which will be shared in the forthcoming newsletters). As we are a community of learners, I invite you to please share your racial-justice prayers, protests, lamentations, and visions for the future here.</image:caption>

<image:title>Newsletter - &&&'s Spring 2021 Issue: Entering the Wounds of Racism, Climate Chaos, and Covid-19 - Of course, there are more than three. Wounds. Jesus had at least five: two in his hands, two in his feet, and one in his side. Some count seven. I find infinitely more. Seemingly endless injustices and inequalities, compounding the wounds of racism, climate chaos, and Covid-19. Grief upon grief. Among medieval Christian popular devotions, still practiced today, is the contemplation of Jesus’ wounds, not as some morbid fascination with creepy lacerations, but perhaps something similar to the “infinity of space” described in Marcel Proust’s Swann’s Way or in the “wedge-shaped core of darkness” in Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse. Luminous-dark entryways into Mystery, if not into boundless depths of love.</image:title>

<image:title>Newsletter - &&&'s Spring 2021 Issue: Entering the Wounds of Racism, Climate Chaos, and Covid-19 - Entering the Wounds: Healing Practice As &&&’s “Yearlong Beaded Novena for Racial Justice,” with the Woman Clothed with the Sun, concludes on March 26, with our focus this month on “integral ecology”– social and environmental – we thank you for joining us to whatever extent you have been able and we hope to hear from you, by email or on our blog or Instagram, even if you only participated in part: what happened as a result? We also invite you to join us in the following practice: from March 27 (Passover begins) to April 4 (Passover ends, Easter begins) – as a “bridging novena” into spring and as a possible ongoing practice, whenever we fear that suffering, our own or others, may exceed our capacity, as well as when we find ourselves unaware of, making light of, dull or numb to, or intentionally or unintentionally ignoring or minimizing the suffering in and around us. That is, to enter the wounds. What we may otherwise find unbearable, or omit, miss, overlook, or turn away from. And, to discover what may be found there. In other words, this practice is an inversion, of sorts, of the “Inventory of Wonders” suggested in &&&’s Winter 2019/2020 newsletter. Rather than inventorying what conspicuously calls for our rapt attention and effortlessly enlarges our hearts, in this practice we do the opposite - and share in our journals, in a work of art, with one who understands, or here, what we discover, and, most importantly, … what next? “There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.” ~Maya Angelou</image:title>
